A Persistent Question
Why do capable leaders struggle most when uncertainty is highest?
You cannot control the wind. But you can learn to navigate it.
It was shaped through decades of leadership experience, hard-earned insight, and a simple but persistent question:
Why do capable leaders struggle most when uncertainty is highest?
Founder James Coolidge began his leadership journey early. He was recognized for his ability to connect with people and naturally stepping into leadership roles from a young age. Over time, that path led into executive leadership across complex, high-stakes environments where decisions mattered and pressure was constant.
Like many leaders, he invested in the expected path of development through books, traditional frameworks, training programs, and expert guidance. Each offered value. Yet in moments of real uncertainty, something didn’t hold.
Across organizations and sectors, a pattern emerged.
When complexity increased and control diminished, leadership often shifted. Confidence gave way to reactivity. Blame replaced clarity. Even strong leaders (himself included) defaulted to behaviours that didn’t align with their values or intent.
The gap wasn’t knowledge.
It was something deeper.
That realization came into sharp focus during the COVID-19 community response. While some leaders and organizations adapted, others stalled and disappeared. The difference wasn’t resources or intelligence. It was how leaders processed uncertainty, navigated complexity, and led themselves under pressure.
Determined to understand why, James returned to study, completing a Master of Arts in Leadership at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.
What emerged was a fundamentally different perspective:
Effective leadership is not about mastering a single framework. It is about developing the capacity to think, adapt, and lead across changing conditions. And that capacity starts with self.
Understanding your values, motivations, biases, and default responses under pressure. Differentiating your ideal leadership self from how your default self shows up when challenged by systems. Building the cognitive and emotional strength required to navigate complexity with clarity and intention.
Obportum was built on this foundation.
Inspired by the nautical meaning of “Obportum” (toward the harbour) the work recognizes a simple truth:
You cannot control the wind. But you can learn to navigate it.
Through executive coaching, peer collaboration, and structured development training and experiences, Obportum supports leaders to:
- Lead with clarity in uncertainty
- Navigate complex systems with confidence
- Strengthen decision-making under pressure
- Align leadership behaviour with values and intent
- Build teams that adapt, perform, and grow together
This is not about adding more tools.
It is about becoming the leader who can differentiate themselves to objectively assess and adjust organizational systems effectively, consistently, and when it matters most.
And it all begins the same way.
